Take Some CBD: CBD, also known as Cannabidiol, is one of the two main components in marijuana along with THC. Though it doesn’t get you high in the way THC does, there are some promising studies showing its effectiveness in reducing anxiety. Though it’s not something most of us generally discuss, anxiety is relatively common among heavy trainers, which could be due to a variety of factors, like being part of the Warrior gene haplogroup.
If you’re unaware of the new gene research, it’s recently been discovered that people with the MAOA-L gene variant (the “warrior gene”) causes its carriers to be more willing to take risks while simultaneously enabling them to better assess their chances of success in critical situations… but that comes at a cost. Whether anxiety is due to the “warrior gene,” too many stimulants, or some combination thereof, most of us could stand to chill out a bit. Until recently, our options were basically limited to smoking weed (which comes with a variety of legal and employment concerns) or getting drunk, but with the recent introduction of CBD products, we might have a solid third option.
A recent case study examined the existing research on CBD in treating anxiety and sleep and found the following:
“The final sample consisted of 72 adults presenting with primary concerns of anxiety (n = 47) or poor sleep (n = 25). Anxiety scores decreased within the first month in 57 patients (79.2%) and remained decreased during the study duration. Sleep scores improved within the first month in 48 patients (66.7%) but fluctuated over time” (Shannon).
In short, CBD seems to be incredibly effective in treating anxiety, though it is less so in treating sleep disorders. Thus, whether you’re tense because you “eat clen and tren hard,” you’re pumped full of preworkout, or you’re just a hot-blooded maniac, CBD might be a solid option for chilling you out so you can relax in your downtime and grow.
