Blueberry Extract and brain health

Your brain is the command center of your body. If it is not working properly, the rest of your body will suffer. Not only does your brain allow you to form and access memories, it also controls your heart rate, blood pressure, and ability to breath. If the brain is damaged beyond repair, your heart and lungs will stop working. When they stop, you die. And if you think you are safe from developing a neurological disease, think again. The worldwide number of potent and fatal neurological disorders is increasing. And to make matters worse, this increase in neurological disorders is occurring in younger people. We are now seeing alarming increases in neurological diseases in people under the age of 55.

No need to worry. Blueberry extract can help! Several recent studies have shown that supplementing with blueberry extracts can improve brain health, and overall cognitive function. One recent study performed by British researchers is especially exciting. They used a functional MRI scanner to observe the brain activity of two groups of older adults. The two groups were either given a placebo or blueberry extract for 12 weeks. The results were impressive.

Supplementing with blueberry extract increases brain activity
Subjects in the blueberry supplemented group showed a significant increase in brain activity while taking cognitive tests when compared to the placebo group. The functional MRI showed increased activity in the areas of the brain activated by the cognitive tests.

Supplementing with blueberry extract improves blood flow to the brain
Subjects in the blueberry supplemented group showed significant improvement in blood flow to areas of the brain where touch, sensory, and visual information is processed. This blood flow improvement was not seen in the placebo group.

Supplementing with blueberry extract improves working memory
Subjects in the blueberry supplemented group showed significant improvement in working memory when compared to the placebo group. Working memory is like your computers RAM. It holds temporary information that can help you make fast decisions and remember to get the three items you needed from the grocery store.

Supplementing with blueberry extract improves cognitive function
In a study published in the April 2010 Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, researchers from the Linus Pauling Institute found that administering blueberry extract to older adults with early memory problems made a significant positive difference. After the 12-week study, those adults that used blueberry extracts performed significantly better on memory tests compared to their scores at the start of the study.

Supplementing with blueberry extract helps fight excitotoxicity

Excitotoxicity is damage done to the brain by persistent, excessive stimulation by neurotransmitters. Such diseases as MS, Alzheimer’s disease, ALS, Parkinson’s disease, alcoholism, Huntington’s disease, and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) cause excitotoxicity. A 2013 study showed that blueberry polyphenols can fight the effects of excitotoxicity. Specifically, the inflammation and oxidative stress caused by excitotoxicity.

IN CONCLUSION

Recent studies are now validating the positive cognitive benefits of supplementing with blueberry extracts. Not only does supplementing with blueberries improve cognitive function and memory, it also helps to fight against the effects of neurological diseases. Everyone can benefit from using blueberry extract.
